At Howl we specialise in journeying skills, the Bushcraft we practice and teach is that of the traveler. There is a wonderful simplicity that comes from taking a trip in the outdoors, a pragmatism gleaned from necessity. We draw from this experience in the field to teach a set of skills and knowledge based in expedience and realism, skills that actually get used while outdoors. We provide an insight into the Natural world, opening up a vast array of natural resources and knowledge to help you travel with less reliance on the contents of your rucksack: it’s what you carry in your mind that matters.

We teach these practical skills in a friendly and open way, our hope being to enable you to make your adventures into the Great Outdoors memorable and enjoyable. We'll help you cultivate a positive attitude, a confidence in yourself, and a connection with the natural world through which you travel.

We promote the utmost respect for the environment, the ability to pass unnoticed through the woods brings with it a deeper understanding of the wilderness, and our part in it. It is this philosophy which forms the very core of our work.

Bushcraft and the Canoe

Bushcraft Courses

Join us in our 12 acre private woodland just 20 minutes north of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. Our canopied basecamp and a wood fire ensure our clients keep dry and are supplied with tea, coffee and biscuits.

All of our sessions are run with a maximum of 8 people, that way we can maintain a low presence in the forest in order to experience Nature up close. The small group sizes also ensure a high level of interaction with the instructor, we'll get plenty of one to one tuition through the workshops to develop your skills at your own pace.

Families are just as welcome as individuals, we’ve ensured our family sessions are just as engaging to young people they are to the over 18’s

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, we're very open and there's no obligations.

Bushcraft and the Canoe

This full day outdoor course will introduce you to the canoe as a means of travel for journeys in the backcountry, and the bushcraft that can be useful on such trips. This day is designed as a perfect prep day for our Scottish trips, although it's also great if you just want a day outdoors in the Peak District to learn something new.

Joining Jamie to deliver the workshop is Robin Heath who'll be showing you some of the basics of paddling a canoe. This is the ideal starting point for our Scottish Canoe Expedition or if you think canoe travel might be something your interested in and want to try out before commiting to a full trip.

A Saturday of Expedition Bushcraft and an Introduction to the Canoe

We'll spend the first half of the day looking at the important skills needed to wild camp while canoeing, whatever the weather! We'll make a campfire lunch as a group as part of the course, followed by an afternoon canoeing on a gentle stretch of river to learn some introductory canoe skills.

We'll look at organising your equipment and packing it into the canoe.

Expedition group tarp arrangements will be a key component in our journey, along with some key knots, to give us a comfortable space to have lunch each day.
