At Howl we specialise in journeying skills, the Bushcraft we practice and teach is that of the traveler. There is a wonderful simplicity that comes from taking a trip in the outdoors, a pragmatism gleaned from necessity. We draw from this experience in the field to teach a set of skills and knowledge based in expedience and realism, skills that actually get used while outdoors. We provide an insight into the Natural world, opening up a vast array of natural resources and knowledge to help you travel with less reliance on the contents of your rucksack: it’s what you carry in your mind that matters.

We teach these practical skills in a friendly and open way, our hope being to enable you to make your adventures into the Great Outdoors memorable and enjoyable. We'll help you cultivate a positive attitude, a confidence in yourself, and a connection with the natural world through which you travel.

We promote the utmost respect for the environment, the ability to pass unnoticed through the woods brings with it a deeper understanding of the wilderness, and our part in it. It is this philosophy which forms the very core of our work.

These stormproof matches will light in any weather, giving you an emergency option when you need a fire fast.

I chose to assemble my own waterproof match kit after been continually disappointed with the options already on the market. Most offer either 2nd class matches or a cheap waterproof case, or both! The milled aluminium cases can be very expensive and in very cold weather dangerous to hold and difficult to open. All options I'd looked into also held a minimum amount of space for a token piece of tinder: When you are in real need of this kit, cold and wet, having the tinder options I've assembled here will go a long way in getting your fire started...along with good bushcraft skills of course!

  • The Bottle: This had to be a durable option, so it had to be a Nalgene bottle. Pocket sized, but big enough to fit all the contents inside. And proven waterproofness during our trips in Scotland.
  • The Matches: 15 - the same high quality stormproof matches recommended by Falt & Mears in their book "Out on the Land".
  • The Tinder: A sleeve of rubber protects the outside of the bottle and provides extra grip if your hands are cold and wet, also doubles as a reliable when wet tinder which will take a flame from your match and burn hot. A method used by the military during jungle exercises. Inside the bottle is stored some custom made strips of waxed cotton wool which again will light with the matches, but also a Firesteel, to help you get your fire lit.
