The Year Course subset
We are delighted to offer this partial subsidy to anyone currently studying at under graduate or post graduate level in Archeology.
The Year Course Subset is a 4 module programme that explores the rich history of the human relationship with other animals from the temperate zone, in the production of clothing and the acquisition of food.
Module 1: 17-19th May 2024
Fishing techniques passive and active, legal and illegal understanding from the UK. Net sewing to work as a group in producing a large gill net. Production of wooden netting tools in gauges and shuttles/ needles. Nature observation skills and the sit spot. Bread baking and fish preparation techniques. Natural glues; resins and tars from trees. Tree identification session. Making and understanding willow fish traps.
Module 2: 21-23rd June 2024
Tanning: buckskin, leather, fur and rawhide. Overview of buckskin making. Over view of the use of tannins in preparing leather. Guided step by step process of turning deer skins into durable buckskin material for clothing.
Module 3: 20-22nd September 2024
Fishing techniques looking at hooks with active and passive methods. Making Nootka traditional hooks, making fishing 'boards'. Horse hair, sinew and bast technology fishing lines understood. Introduction to understanding animal tracks and tracking. Bone work in replicating fishing harpoons. Making and understanding the hobo fishing kit. Plant lore and uses walk. Understanding physiology in relation to crashing off the Western diet and how this affects the body, learning coping strategies for hunger.
Module 4: 15-17th November 2024
Deep dive into tanning theory, revisiting techniques covered in module 4. Tanning fish skins and making a small Saami inspired pouch to master various stitching techniques and gain experience in using natural materials to make pouches and clothing.
This subsidy is made possible by provision from Living by Nature, A.Woodsman, Prehistoric Experiences, and Howl Bushcraft.
There are 5 placements available via application and selection, applications must be submitted by April 30th 2024. The successful applicant will have their places secured by May 5th.
The four modules represent over £1600 of course provision and the subset is only available via application. Successful applicants will receive a £1000 subsidy against this cost, applied at the time of booking. The remaining cost is required before the course begins in May, although this cost may be spread across the months prior to the final date in November by agreement with the course provider.
