Why The Biome Expeditions?

Long before maps were complete and borders were drawn, people travelled the earth driven by urge to explore. They followed rivers, crossed deserts, climbed mountains and entered forests following that echo from within, to understand the land and their place within it.

The Biome Expeditions revive that tradition.

This is not tourism dressed as adventure, nor bushcraft confined to familiar woods. It is an invitation to exchange the quotidian for the extraordinary: to step beyond comfort and into landscapes that have shaped cultures, species and survival for millennia.

Across seven of Earth's great land biomes, you'll learn from those who know these places best: indigenous communities, local guides, naturalists and wilderness practitioners. Together we'll explore practical skills, as well as the ecology, folklore, craftsmanship and quiet wisdom that each landscape has cultivated.

Whether driven by wanderlust, biophilia, or simply the feeling that there is more to discover than modern life allows, these expeditions are for those who believe the natural world is not merely something to visit, but something to understand.

Seven biomes. Seven expeditions. A lifetime of discovery.

Is This For Me?

The Biome Expeditions are for those who find themselves drawn to wild places. For those who feel a quiet pull towards distant horizons, who value questions as much as answers, and who believe there is always more to learn from the natural world.

Find those fleeting, numinous moments of awe when a landscape feels larger than explanation; feel the telluric forces that have shaped mountains, forests, deserts and tundra over countless generations.

These expeditions call to bushcrafters, naturalists, researchers, photographers, outdoor professionals and lifelong learners alike. For anyone who has ever sondered with the realisation that every community you encounter carries its own history, traditions and relationship with the land with a richness that ripples through our souls.

If you are comfortable in the liminal space between adventure and education, between wilderness and culture, between visitor and student, then you may have found what you've been looking for.

  • No. Each expedition can be booked independently, so you're free to choose the biomes that interest you most.

For those who decide to complete all seven over time, The Biome Expeditions offers a truly unique journey across Earth's seven major land biomes. Along the way, you'll experience some of the planet's most remarkable landscapes, learn bushcraft and ecological knowledge, and meet communities from across the globe; creating a lifetime of adventure, learning, and cultural discovery at your own pace.

  • No. The Biome Expeditions are designed as a rolling expedition series, so there's no requirement to complete them consecutively.

Each expedition will run on a recurring schedule, allowing you to join the next available departure whenever it suits you. If you miss one, simply book onto a future date when that biome is offered again.

Whether you complete all seven over a few years or spread them across a decade, you'll still be working towards the same remarkable achievement; exploring Earth's seven major land biomes at a pace that fits your life.

  • Yes. We hope to work alongside academics, students, conservation groups, and educators to encourage a deeper understanding of each biome's ecology, traditional knowledge, and environmental challenges.

  • Wherever possible, yes. We believe the deepest understanding of a biome comes from those who have lived alongside it for generations. Our goal is to build respectful partnerships that benefit local communities while providing participants with genuine learning experiences.

  • We work to develop expeditions in partnership with local communities and organisations, ensuring that cultural knowledge is shared with permission, guides are fairly compensated, and experiences are designed to benefit both participants and host communities. Our aim is to learn with local people, not simply travel through their landscapes.

Great Expeditions Are Never Built Alone

The Biome Expeditions is a long-term project to explore Earth's seven major land biomes through bushcraft, ecology, cultural heritage and adventure. Every expedition is shaped by the people who know these landscapes best.

We're looking to build meaningful, long-lasting partnerships with individuals and organisations who share our belief that wilderness is best understood through knowledge, respect and collaboration.

Whether you're an indigenous knowledge holder, a mountain guide, a university researcher or an expedition logistics specialist, we'd be delighted to begin a conversation.

Have An Idea?

Some of our best expeditions may begin with a single conversation.

If you believe your knowledge, organisation or community could contribute to The Biome Expeditions, we'd love to hear your ideas.

Whether you're helping shape a new expedition, introducing us to local experts, supporting conservation work or developing educational opportunities, let's explore what's possible.

Who we’re looking to work with:

  • The oldest knowledge of any landscape belongs to the people who have lived with it for generations.

Where invited, we hope to work alongside indigenous communities to help participants better understand traditional ecological knowledge, craftsmanship, foodways, storytelling, navigation, tracking and the cultural relationships that exist between people and place.

Our aim is always to create respectful partnerships that recognise cultural ownership, ensure fair compensation and allow communities to decide how and what knowledge is shared.

  • Every biome has its own challenges.

We're looking for experienced local guides who know their landscapes intimately and can help us deliver safe, authentic and educational expeditions.

Whether your expertise lies in desert travel, canoe expeditioning, alpine mountaineering, wildlife tracking or wilderness medicine, we'd love to hear from you.

  • Healthy ecosystems make meaningful expeditions possible.

We welcome partnerships with conservation charities, national parks, wildlife trusts and environmental organisations working to protect biodiversity and cultural landscapes.

Together we can help raise awareness, support local conservation efforts and encourage responsible travel.

  • The Biome Expeditions aims to bridge practical field experience with scientific understanding.

We'd welcome collaborations with universities, research institutions and independent scientists interested in ecology, anthropology, archaeology, geography, ethnobotany, environmental science or conservation.

Potential collaborations could include guest lectures, field demonstrations, citizen science projects or educational partnerships.

  • We're keen to develop relationships with organisations whose products and values align with responsible exploration and outdoor education.

Potential partnerships may include expedition equipment, clothing, navigation technology, photography, publishing, education or conservation initiatives.

Our focus is always on genuine collaboration rather than simple product placement.

  • Every partnership is built on a shared commitment to:

    • Respect for indigenous cultures and traditional knowledge.

    • Fair collaboration and transparent communication.

    • Environmental responsibility and Leave No Trace principles.

    • Education before entertainment.

    • Safety without compromising authenticity.

    • Creating lasting benefits for local communities wherever possible.
