At Howl we specialise in journeying skills, the Bushcraft we practice and teach is that of the traveler. There is a wonderful simplicity that comes from taking a trip in the outdoors, a pragmatism gleaned from necessity. We draw from this experience in the field to teach a set of skills and knowledge based in expedience and realism, skills that actually get used while outdoors. We provide an insight into the Natural world, opening up a vast array of natural resources and knowledge to help you travel with less reliance on the contents of your rucksack: it’s what you carry in your mind that matters.

We teach these practical skills in a friendly and open way, our hope being to enable you to make your adventures into the Great Outdoors memorable and enjoyable. We'll help you cultivate a positive attitude, a confidence in yourself, and a connection with the natural world through which you travel.

We promote the utmost respect for the environment, the ability to pass unnoticed through the woods brings with it a deeper understanding of the wilderness, and our part in it. It is this philosophy which forms the very core of our work.

Journey Utility Gloves by Journeyman Handcraft

“Here at Journeyman we've been using gloves outdoors for years and they are an essential piece of our kit, however, we've always felt that there were a few important features missing from a standard pair of leather gloves.
So we've created out very own bespoke designed gloves which have been adapted to perfectly suit bushcraft and the outdoors. Made from a supple veg tanned calf leather and lined in wool, the gloves are equally strong and comfortable to wear.”

These features include:
-Wool insulation, a natural material which will keep you warm in winter but also provide protection from the heat of the fire.
- The brass eyelet allows you to clip them onto your belt or rucksack for easy acess.
- The extra leather reinforcement on the palm adds extra protection to the glove when removing hot pans from the fire.
- The index finger has reinforcment in the one area that gets the most wear, meaning you won't be seeing a hole there any time soon.

Care and Maintainenance
Its when really hot pots touch the soft calf leather, that your gloves are at risk of , so we recommend you regularly wax your gloves with leather balm to keep them supple and stop them drying out.

You want to be able to use your gloves to remove hot pots from the fire right? It's just practical, thats why we added the reinforcements. So try and use the reinforced areas when touching hot pots.

I’ve worked with Brian at Journeyman to help produce what we think is a practical leather glove for all round outdoor utility use. We wanted a tough leather glove that was comfortable to wear and use in the woods, around camp, and during work which would be harsh on the hands. I use ropes a fair bit at Howl, whether that’s for setting up a basecamp or abseiling down a crag, so taking inspiration from many belay glove designs, Brian added a few reinforced panels to these gloves to layer up extra protection is high wear areas. This has had the added benefit of providing some additional thermal protection for lifting the occasional billy can from the fire. I couldn’t be happier with how this project as turned out, and I’m proud to present them to you with Journeyman Handcraft. JD - Howl Bushcraft
