Hammock Hang with Howl: Make Your Own Woodland Hammock
Hammock Hang with Howl is a practical half-day course in making, setting up and using a hammock as a comfortable outdoor sleeping system. You’ll create your own hammock, take it into the woods and learn how to turn it into a relaxed base for camping, resting and sleeping.
The course is led by instructors with extensive experience making and using hammocks in a wide range of environments, from expeditions in the Amazon jungle to summer trips in Scotland and Sweden. These experiences have shown us how versatile hammocks can be, particularly when the ground is rocky, wet, uneven or covered with insects and other wildlife.
By lifting you clear of the ground, a hammock can provide a remarkably comfortable way to spend time outdoors. With the right suspension, insulation and weather protection, it offers a dry, level and breathable sleeping space while allowing you to camp in places where finding a suitable tent pitch would be difficult.
Make a Hammock to Take Home
We’ll begin by introducing the materials, components and construction of a dependable woodland hammock. With support from the Howl instructors, you’ll work through the making process and produce your own practical hammock for camping, relaxing or carrying on future outdoor adventures.
Making your own equipment gives you a better understanding of how it works and how to get the best from it. You’ll see how the hammock supports your weight, how its dimensions influence comfort and how the finished design works with suspension, insulation and weather protection.
At the end of the workshop, the hammock is yours to take home and use.
Learn from Real-World Hammock Experience
Hammocks are often associated with warm-weather relaxation, but they can be an effective sleeping system in many different environments. Our instructors have used them on expeditions in the Amazon jungle, where getting off the ground can mean avoiding wet forest floors, insects and other wildlife, as well as in Scotland and Sweden during summer trips.
We’ll share the practical lessons gained from using hammocks in these varied conditions, including how to choose a suitable site, adapt your setup to the environment and create a comfortable camp around the trees available to you.
Hang It Safely and Comfortably
Once the hammocks are complete, we’ll take them into the woods and learn how to set them up safely. You’ll consider tree health, overhead hazards, ground conditions and the space surrounding your chosen pitch before attaching anything to the trees.
We’ll show you how to position tree-friendly straps, judge a sensible hanging height and create an effective suspension angle. You’ll also learn how to adjust the sag of the hammock and recognise when it has been hung too tightly, too loosely or too high.
These practical skills will help protect both you and the woodland while making your hammock quicker and easier to pitch.
Discover the Benefits of Sleeping Off the Ground
A hammock can transform the experience of camping outdoors. Instead of sleeping on hard, rocky or wet ground, you can rest above it in a suspended, breathable bed. This can make it easier to find a comfortable pitch, particularly where the woodland floor is uneven, muddy or covered with roots.
Being off the ground also provides separation from insects, dampness and some of the wildlife that may pass through a campsite at night. Combined with suitable insulation and a tarp, a hammock can create a calm, dry and remarkably relaxed place to sleep.
During the course, you’ll experiment with the diagonal sleeping position, suspension angle and hammock sag to find a comfortable lay. You’ll learn how small adjustments can reduce pressure points, improve stability and help you settle into the hammock with less effort.
learn to Build a Complete Hammock Camping System
Comfortable hammock camping involves more than suspending fabric between two trees. We’ll introduce the wider sleeping system, including tarps, sleeping mats, underquilts and other forms of insulation.
You’ll learn why cold air beneath a hammock can remove body heat, how to prepare for changing weather and how to arrange your setup so essential equipment remains protected and within reach. We’ll also discuss how to adapt your system for different seasons and environments, from warm summer woodland camps to cooler and wetter conditions.
The course will give you a strong foundation for developing your own hammock camping system for bushcraft camps, woodland weekends, expeditions and lightweight journeys.
