Amazonian Basketry Workshop - Make a foraging basket in the Matses style

£105.00

There is a quiet satisfaction in weaving something lasting from the living forest. On this Amazonian Basketry Workshop, you'll learn to transform natural fibres into a strong, functional foraging basket using techniques passed down through generations of the Matsés people of the Peruvian Amazon. Guided by Jamie Dakota, you'll discover the rhythm of weaving, the patience of working with natural materials, and the simple pleasure of creating something with your own hands. More than a craft, this is an invitation to connect with an ancient tradition that has travelled from the rainforest to the British woodland.

Learn the traditional art of Amazonian foragers' basketry

On this full-day workshop, you'll learn to weave a traditional Matsés style carrying basket using authentic techniques taught to Jamie Dakota by Tupa Matsés in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Working with natural fibres, you'll be guided through every stage of the process, from understanding the materials and preparing them for weaving, to mastering the patterns and structure that give these baskets their remarkable strength and practicality.

Why this basketry course is different

This is not simply a weaving class. It is an opportunity to learn a living tradition that has been generously shared across cultures. Jamie was taught these methods directly by Tupa Matsés during the Amazon Jungle Trip. With not only the blessing but the active encouragement of Tupa Matsés and her community, Jamie now brings this knowledge to the UK, helping preserve and celebrate a remarkable craft while honouring its origins.

You'll leave with your own handcrafted Amazonian foraging basket, a new understanding of traditional fibre crafts, and the confidence to continue exploring this timeless skill.

As with all of our courses, gift certificates are available. You'll receive a welcome pack explaining the workshop, along with a voucher that can be redeemed against any available course date within 18 months of purchase.

This workshop has its roots in the columbian Amazon.

In 2025, I spent a week living from a remote jungle camp alongside members of the Matsés community, learning directly from Tupa Matsés. She was a patient, disciplined teacher, insisting that every movement had purpose and that every stage of the weave mattered. What began as a lesson in basket making became a lesson in slowing down, observing carefully, and respecting both the materials and the tradition they represent.

When I asked Tupa whether she would be comfortable with me sharing this method back in the UK, her response is something I'll never forget. Her eyes lit up at the thought that a craft passed down through her family and community could be learned on the other side of the world. Not only did she give her blessing, she actively encouraged me to teach it, seeing it as a way for her heritage and culture to continue reaching new people.

That conversation is the reason this course exists.

Throughout the day you'll learn the same weaving method I was taught in the Amazon, creating your own traditional foraging basket while gaining an appreciation for the remarkable culture from which it comes. My aim isn't simply to teach you how to weave a basket, but to pass on the story, values, and respect that accompanied every lesson I received in the rainforest.

You'll leave with a handcrafted basket, a timeless practical skill, and, I hope, a deeper appreciation for the people who have generously shared this tradition with us.
