Savanna - A breathtaking exploration in Northern Kenya

£1,825.00

See Savanna in a new light, following Samburu footsteps as bushcraft comes to life

There are landscapes that can be visited, and others that must be lived in.

In the wild country of northern Kenya, beneath the great mass of Mt O’lолokwe, we enter the Savanna: one of seven great biomes we will explore through the Howl Bushcraft Biome Expeditions.

For nine days we will live alongside the Samburu, learning something of the old knowledge that has allowed people to endure and flourish here: finding water in dry country, reading the tracks of animals, gathering wild foods and medicines, making fire, working with natural materials, and understanding the movements of wildlife across the land.

We will follow elephant trails, visit the ancient Singing Wells, sit beside fires with warriors and elders, and climb high onto sacred Mt O’lолokwe. There, amongst ancient cycad forest, we will make our camp and watch the sun fall across the immense plains of northern Kenya.

More than a visit, it is an attempt to know a wild landscape more intimately through the people, animals and old ways that belong to it.

Your adventure begins with the journey north from Nairobi, leaving the city behind as we travel into the increasingly wild country of northern Kenya and towards the great silhouette of Mt O’lолokwe. Our home for the next nine days is in the Samburu Nature Reserve, a base from which we can begin to explore the savanna and learn from the Samburu people whose lives, traditions and knowledge have been shaped by this landscape for generations.

Together with our Samburu hosts and guides, we'll establish a simple wild camp in the bush, forage traditionally harvested foods and learn some of the skills that make life here possible. We'll visit the extraordinary Singing Wells, where Samburu warriors have dug down into the earth for centuries, following the movements of elephants to locate precious water. People, livestock and elephants still draw upon these same hidden sources, offering a rare insight into how closely lives are entwined across this landscape.

The bushcraft of the savanna has grown from the particular demands of this place. You'll practise traditional fire-making, animal tracking and wilderness skills with local guides, learn about medicinal plants and their preparation, and work alongside artisans practising skills such as basketry, beading and bow-making. These are traditions shaped by available materials, seasonal scarcity and countless generations spent observing the country around them.

Wildlife will accompany us throughout the journey. We'll rise early to the banks of the Ewaso River, watching for elephants as they follow their daily migration routes, before heading out with trackers to read the signs left by animals moving through the savanna. Reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, crocodiles and large predators inhabit this country. Through our Samburu guides we'll explore the stories, knowledge and conservation practices that have developed through centuries of sharing the landscape with them.

Time spent with the local community brings another dimension to the expedition. We'll experience some of the daily rhythms of Samburu life through livestock and pastoralism, preparing chai over an open fire, traditional shelter building, language and craft. There will be conversations about seasonal movement, drought and scarcity, alongside the opportunity to simply spend time together. One evening culminates with Nyama Choma cooked over the fire, followed by singing and dancing with warriors and members of the community.

Later in the expedition, we shoulder our packs and begin the ascent of Mt O’lолokwe. Elephant trails climb towards the summit, where natural springs, ancient ceremonial caves and an extraordinary virgin cycad forest survive high above the plains. We'll establish a wild camp on the mountain and spend the night beneath the African sky, sharing stories around the fire and waking to sunrise spreading across the wilderness of northern Kenya.

Over nine days, familiarity begins to replace first impressions. Tracks in the dust become readable. Plants acquire names, stories and uses. The search for water reveals patterns in the land. Wildlife becomes part of the wider ecology and culture of the place.

This is the heart of the Biome Expeditions. We want to spend meaningful time within each of the world's great terrestrial biomes, learning from the landscapes themselves and from the people whose knowledge has grown within them. In the savanna, that means walking, camping, making, listening and sharing fires with the Samburu, gradually finding our own small place within this immense and ancient landscape.
